What I watched a long, long, long time ago

Daily writing prompt
What TV shows did you watch as a kid?

I can still hear the familiar theme songs and see the fuzzy, black and white images on the screen. As a kid, my world revolved around the television schedule, a predictable rhythm that marked the different parts of my day. From after-school adventures to Saturday morning cartoons and prime-time family viewing, these shows weren’t just entertainment—they were a big part of my childhood.

After-School Classics

When the final school bell rang, I’d race home for my favorite part of the day: TV time. Before the days of streaming, these were the shows that filled that sweet spot between homework and dinner. I remember the gothic suspense of Dark Shadows, which I watched in black and white, and the hilarious misadventures of the castaways on Gilligan’s Island. And who could forget the magical world of I Dream of Jeannie or the prehistoric laughs with The Flintstones? These shows were the perfect escape, a way to wind down and get lost in a different world before the evening’s activities began.

Prime-Time Family Favorites

Evenings were for watching TV with the family. The shows we watched often depended on the day of the week, creating a weekly ritual. Sunday nights meant gathering around the TV to watch The Ed Sullivan Show, a variety show with incredible performances. Other nights brought the witty comedy of The Dick Van Dyke Show and later, the groundbreaking humor of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Bob Newhart Show. And for a bit of mystery, there was nothing better than watching the legendary defense attorney Perry Mason solve another case.

Saturday Morning Cartoons and Music

Saturday mornings were in a league of their own—they belonged to cartoons! I’d wake up early, pour a bowl of cereal, and settle in for hours of animated fun. My lineup included the classic antics of Looney Tunes, the clever spy parodies of The Bullwinkle and Rocky Show, and the thrilling adventures of Johnny Quest.

Later in the afternoon, the screen came alive with music and dancing on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. It was a glimpse into the pop culture of the time, and a way to feel connected to what was new and cool.

A Few More Favorites

Of course, no list of TV classics would be complete without some all-time greats. I was a huge fan of I Love Lucy, with its timeless physical comedy. I also watched some of the popular game shows and the chaotic, fast-paced humor of Laugh-In. And, I’ll never forget watching the very first episode of Saturday Night Live and following it through all of its great years. The cast and the skits were legendary!
